When Is the Best Time to Go Rafting in Aspen?
Rafting Season Overview: May through September
The Aspen rafting season on the Roaring Fork River runs from early May through September — and sometimes even into October if the weather cooperates.
Each part of the season offers something unique. Spring brings fast, high-water excitement; mid-summer provides splashy, fun whitewater; and late summer delivers calm, scenic floats through golden mountain valleys.
At Thunder River Adventures, every guest — from families with kids to thrill-seeking adventurers — can find a safe and exciting trip no matter when they visit.
May and June: The Power of Spring Runoff
In May and June, the mountains come alive as the snowpack begins to melt. This is known as spring runoff, when the Roaring Fork River rises daily with fresh snowmelt and delivers powerful, changing whitewater.
Every day on the river feels different during runoff — it’s dynamic, thrilling, and the true start of the Aspen rafting season.
For Thrill Seekers: Our Slaughterhouse Section is the most exciting Class IV run in the valley, offering nonstop action and a six-foot waterfall drop. We carefully monitor water levels, with a safety cutoff around 2000 CFS.
For Most Guests: We typically recommend the Canyon Cruise (Class III) or Scenic Float Trip (Class I–II) during this time. These trips stay fun and adventurous even when flows are high, delivering waves, splashes, and stunning scenery without being overly technical.
Even in peak runoff, every guest enjoys a thrill — whether it’s the rush of whitewater or the beauty of a river running at full power.
July and August: Classic Colorado Rafting Weather
By July, the river begins to settle into its steady summer flow. The air is warm, the water still lively, and the weather almost always perfect for a day on the river. Afternoon thunderstorms add a splash of drama and sometimes temporarily raise water levels.
This is when the Canyon Cruise really shines — fun, splashy Class III whitewater that’s ideal for families, first-timers, and adventure seekers alike. The Scenic Float Trip continues to run all season long, offering calm current, mountain views, and abundant wildlife.
For guests looking for something different, we also offer Inflatable Kayak Tours on moderate sections of the Roaring Fork from July through September, giving you a hands-on way to navigate your own craft under guide supervision.
Whether you’re paddling as a family or chasing waves with friends, mid-summer rafting in Aspen offers excitement for everyone — without the intensity of spring flows.
September and Early October: Serene Scenery and Fall Colors
As the temperatures cool, the Roaring Fork Valley turns golden with fall foliage. The river flows more gently, and the crowds thin out, making it a beautiful time for peaceful adventures.
The Scenic Float Tour is especially popular this time of year, allowing guests to soak in crisp mountain air, quiet waters, and stunning colors reflected in the river.
Wildlife sightings become more frequent in early fall — ospreys, eagles, deer, and elk are common along the riverbanks. For those looking to end their summer with a tranquil outdoor experience, there’s no better option.
Safety and Experience You Can Count On
While water levels change throughout the season, your safety never does. Each Thunder River Adventures trip is guided by professionals who know the river inside and out. Some of our guides have decades of Class IV and V experience, and all guides have a minimum of three years of professional river guiding experience, along with certifications in swiftwater rescue and first aid.
Before every trip, guides conduct thorough safety and paddle talks, explaining how to paddle, stay secure in the raft, and have the best day possible.
All guests are provided with premium gear at no extra cost — including helmets, PFDs, wetsuits, booties, splash jackets, and fleece when needed — ensuring comfort and safety in any season.
Choosing the Right Trip for Your Visit
At Thunder River Adventures, we take pride in helping guests select the trip that best matches their comfort level and goals. Here’s how the season breaks down:
| Season | River Conditions | Best For | Recommended Trips |
|---|---|---|---|
| May–June | High, fast water | Experienced rafters & thrill seekers | Slaughterhouse, Canyon Cruise |
| July–August | Moderate, splashy flows | Families & first-timers | Canyon Cruise, Scenic Float, Inflatable Kayak |
| September–October | Low, scenic flow | Sightseers & all ages | Scenic Float, Inflatable Kayaks |
Even when the Slaughterhouse Section is temporarily too high or low to run, the Canyon Cruise and Scenic Float continue to provide fun, excitement, and beauty for guests of all ages and experience levels.
Expert Tips for the Best Rafting Experience
Book early for peak dates — spring and early summer trips fill fast.
Dress for the river, not the forecast — it’s often 10°F cooler on the water.
Trust your guide’s recommendation — they’ll match you with the right trip based on flow and comfort level.
