Aspen Summer with Kids: The Best Outdoor Adventures for Families in 2025

Aspen summer with kids

Chris and Kate Edmonds raise their two daughters in Aspen. They know this valley the way people who actually live somewhere know it -- not from a travel guide or a TripAdvisor list, but from years of seasons, local knowledge, and the specific experience of doing outdoor things in this place with kids who have opinions about those things.

Here's their honest guide to Aspen in summer 2025 for families.

The River: Your Starting Point

rafting on the upper roaring fork

The Roaring Fork River is the best outdoor activity in Aspen for families with young children. Not just one of the best -- the best. The Scenic Float through the Middle Roaring Fork is calm, guided, genuinely beautiful, and narrated by guides who make the natural world legible to kids in ways that stick. Osprey identification, river flow explanation, wildlife behavior -- children leave the Scenic Float knowing things they didn't know before, and they leave wanting to come back.

For families with older kids and teenagers, the Canyon Cruise (Class II-III) adds whitewater to the equation without the commitment of the Class IV Slaughterhouse run. Every family member ends up in the same raft, going through the same rapids, experiencing the same thing -- and that shared experience is harder to manufacture than most family vacation planners expect.

Northstar Nature Preserve

Thunder River Adventures offers DIY rentals in the Northstar Nature Preserve -- stand-up paddleboards and inflatable kayaks for families who want to explore independently. The preserve is a protected wildlife corridor with walking trails along the riverbank that are stroller-accessible. For families who want water access without a guided trip, this is an excellent option. The preserve is also one of the genuinely serene places near Aspen that most visitors never find.

The Silver Queen Gondola

The gondola runs in summer and delivers families to 11,212 feet at the top of Aspen Mountain. Views extend across the Elk Mountains in every direction. The Sundeck restaurant at the summit is worth lunch. The round trip is accessible for most ages and fitness levels. The altitude at the top is real -- sit down if anyone feels lightheaded and give it a few minutes.

Maroon Bells

The most photographed mountains in Colorado. Located 10 miles southwest of Aspen and accessible by mandatory shuttle from Aspen Highlands, the Maroon Bells are worth the planning they require. The easy trail around Maroon Lake works for most ages and takes about an hour at a comfortable pace. Book the shuttle in advance -- July and August slots fill days ahead.

Aspen Center for Environmental Studies (ACES)

ACES runs family nature programs at the Hallam Lake wildlife sanctuary in Aspen -- guided wildlife walks, raptor programs, and educational experiences built for young visitors. The resident birds of prey are reliably impressive for children who have been reading about osprey and bald eagles on the river all week.

Planning Notes From Locals

  • Book river trips and gondola tickets before you arrive -- summer fills faster than most visitors expect

  • Altitude hits children differently than adults -- lighter activity on day one, watch for headaches

  • The Maroon Bells shuttle is the thing most people regret not booking early enough -- don't be those people

  • Aspen's core is walkable and stroller-accessible -- leave the car and let the town reveal itself slowly

  • The river is the one thing you should not skip -- it's the experience most unique to this specific place
