A Day in the Life of a Thunder River Adventures Guide

Morning at the Boathouse

For our guides, the day starts early — long before guests arrive. By sunrise, the team is already at the Thunder River Adventures yard, preparing gear, checking rafts, and reviewing river conditions for the day.

Safety always comes first. Guides inspect Sotar rafts, paddles, helmets, life jackets, wetsuits, and splash jackets, making sure every piece of equipment is in top condition. The day’s river flows, weather, and water temperature are reviewed, and guides discuss any new changes to the route or conditions.

Every guide takes pride in knowing the details — from water levels and put-in logistics to the perfect scenic spots guests will love.

Meet and Greet: Welcoming Guests

Once everything is ready, the guides head to the pickup locations in Aspen and Snowmass Village to greet guests. For most visitors, this is their first time meeting the people who will be leading their adventure, and the guides make it clear right away that they’re in professional, friendly hands.

Each trip begins with introductions, laughter, and reassurance. Guides explain the day’s itinerary, answer questions, and help guests relax. From the moment guests step onto the bus, they’re treated like part of the Thunder River Adventures family.

Gearing Up and Safety Talk

At the river, the energy shifts — it’s time to get ready. Guides help each guest find the right-sized helmet, life jacket, and wetsuit. They make sure straps are secure, gear fits comfortably, and everyone feels prepared.

Then comes the safety and paddle talk, a cornerstone of every trip. Guests learn how to paddle in sync, brace their feet, and respond to simple commands like “forward,” “stop,” or “back.”

Our guides’ professionalism shines here — every word comes from experience. Some of our guides have decades of Class IV and V experience, while all have at least three years of professional river guiding experience and certifications in swiftwater rescue and first aid.

Their calm confidence helps first-timers feel at ease, and their humor keeps things light even before the first splash.

On the River: The Best Office in the World

Once the rafts launch, the fun begins. Every trip is different — from the gentle drift of the Scenic Float to the splashy rapids of the Canyon Cruise or the nonstop action of the Slaughterhouse Section.

Guides steer through the river’s features, call out paddle commands, and share stories about the valley’s history, geology, and wildlife.

On the Scenic Float, guides might point out ospreys diving for trout or bald eagles nesting along the riverbank. On the Canyon Cruise, guests laugh together as they hit splashy waves and cheer through small rapids. And on the Slaughterhouse, teamwork, trust, and adrenaline take center stage.

For the guides, there’s nothing better than seeing smiles, laughter, and teamwork as their guests discover the joy of the river.

After the Rapids: Wrapping Up and Celebrating

At the take-out point, the guides and drivers work together to load the gear, roll up rafts, and make sure everything is ready for the next trip. Meanwhile, guests gather for snacks, drinks, and — one of everyone’s favorite moments — the photo slideshow of the day’s adventure.

While guests laugh and point at action shots, guides are already sharing stories, answering questions, and making sure everyone gets the photos and memories they want to take home.

Many guests leave saying it was the best day of their vacation — and that they’ll be back next year. For our guides, that’s the best reward.

End of the Day: Recharging and Reflecting

Once all trips are done, the guides head back to the yard, clean and organize gear, and review the day’s runs. Even after hours on the water, their passion for the river doesn’t stop.

Some guides grab their kayaks for an evening paddle, while others go hiking, fishing, or meet friends downtown for dinner. Living and working in Aspen means the adventure continues long after the last raft comes off the water.

What Our Guides Love Most

When asked what they love most about guiding, the answers are always similar:

  • Meeting new people every day.

  • Sharing the joy of rafting with families and friends.

  • Watching guests conquer fears and find confidence on the river.

  • Spending the summer outside doing what they love most.

At Thunder River Adventures, our guides don’t just lead trips — they create experiences that people remember for life.
